He was raised as an Anglican in the suburban Toronto districts of North York and Scarborough. Later, he moved to the United Kingdom.

His brother Paul is a well-known indie-rock songwriter and musician whereas, his other brother Peter worked for Sears Canada in the past.

In the early ’90s, Mike formed the band Ming Tea along with vocalist, guitarist, actress, and songwriter Susanna Lee Hoffs and singer and songwriter Sidney Matthew Sweet. Mike is the lead vocalist in the band.

His mother Alice was a veteran of the Royal Air Force.

He was 2 years old when he started getting cast in commercials.

After completing his schooling, he joined The Second City Canadian touring company. Later, in 1985, he became one of the founding members of The Comedy Store Players.
