FOUR Brisbane private school students who were in a car crash while on a run to the local McDonald's takeaway during school hours, yesterday spent six hours doing community service at their school.

Marist College Ashgrove deputy headmaster Richard Ward said although three of the Year 12 boys had only minor injuries, they were very lucky not to have been seriously injured or killed.

The accident happened at 1pm on August 14, within 500m of the school, when a student, 18, on P-plates was driving his friends to McDonald's at Newmarket, lost control and hit a power pole.

The uninjured driver was in his mother's car, which was written off.

Mr Ward said emergency services were called to the scene, one boy was taken to hospital with a minor ankle injury and two other boys with cuts and abrasions later were taken to hospital for a check-up.

"This was a very serious matter," Mr Ward said.

He said none of the students were suspended for breaking school rules, despite a request from one parent, because the accident had been a shocking incident for the boys, who were "scared out of their wits".

"The parents were so relieved to see them alive, and they were angry," he said.

Every student who drives to school has to sign a car contract and if the driver wants to take other boys in the car, their parents must give written permission.
